The Hreflang Generator helps you format HTML <link rel="alternate"> tags for translated, localized, or region-specific versions of the same page. Add each alternate page URL, enter the language or language-region value you want in hreflang, optionally mark one row as x-default, and generate a copy-ready block for a page <head>.
This is a tag-formatting tool, not an international SEO crawler. It does not fetch your URLs, detect the page language, validate region codes, compare translated content, check canonical tags, or prove that search engines will use the annotations. Its value is speed and consistency when you already know the final alternate URLs and need clean markup to paste into a template, CMS field, theme file, or development ticket.
Verified Tool Summary
The current production implementation is a browser-side Alpine component named window.bitflanHreflangGeneratorComponent(). It starts with one blank row containing url, lang, and isDefault values. Add Row appends another blank row. The remove icon appears only when more than one row exists, and removing a row immediately regenerates the output after the first successful generation.
When Generate Tags runs, the component loops through the visible rows. A row is included only when its URL is not empty after trimming leading and trailing whitespace. For each included row, the generated string is <link rel="alternate" hreflang="LANG" href="URL" />. If the row is marked as the default row, LANG becomes x-default. If the row is not default and the language field is blank, LANG becomes en. The tags are joined with line breaks in a read-only output textarea.
The Copy button calls the site's clipboard helper with the generated output. Copying may depend on normal browser clipboard permissions, focus, and security rules. The generator itself is client-side JavaScript; no tool-specific upload, URL fetch, save action, or server-side processing step was found for generating the tags. The page may still load normal site services such as reCAPTCHA when enabled, analytics, styles, and scripts.
How to Use the Hreflang Generator
- List the final, public URLs for every equivalent page version you want to annotate, including the current page itself.
- Paste the first URL into the URL field. The visible placeholder is
https://example.com/page. - Enter the intended language value in the Language field, such as
en,en-us,en-gb,fr, orde. - Use Add Row for each additional alternate page. Use the remove icon if a row should not be part of the output.
- Turn on the x-default switch for the one fallback URL, if your page set has a generic selector, global home page, or non-targeted default page.
- Complete reCAPTCHA first if it is visible, then select Generate Tags.
- Review the output and use Copy when the generated block is ready for your template or CMS.
After the first unlocked generation, edits to rows refresh the generated tags automatically through a deep watcher on the row data. If reCAPTCHA is enabled and no response has been completed yet, the tool shows a captcha error and does not unlock the output.
Verified Example
These rows were checked against the production component logic:
| Row | URL entered | Language entered | x-default switch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | https://example.com/en/pricing |
en |
Off |
| 2 | https://example.com/fr/pricing |
fr |
Off |
| 3 | https://example.com/pricing |
Blank | On |
The generated output is:
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="https://example.com/en/pricing" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="fr" href="https://example.com/fr/pricing" />
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com/pricing" />
The third row uses x-default because the default switch overrides the language field. A blank non-default language field would not be rejected; the tool would output hreflang="en". Blank URL rows are omitted entirely.
Inputs, Outputs, and Limitations
| Area | Verified behavior | Review before publishing |
|---|---|---|
| URL field | Accepts typed or pasted text. Leading and trailing whitespace is trimmed before output. | Use fully qualified final URLs, including https:// or http://, hostname, path, and intended trailing slash. |
| Language field | Accepts typed text and inserts it directly into the hreflang attribute unless the row is default. |
Check language and optional region values against the documentation used by your search workflow. The tool does not validate codes. |
x-default |
Only one row can be marked default at a time because selecting one row clears the default flag on the others. | Use it only for a fallback page that is not targeted to one specific language or locale, such as a selector page. |
| Blank rows | Rows with an empty trimmed URL are skipped. | Remove unused rows before copying so the interface stays easy to audit. |
| Escaping | The component interpolates the URL and language text into a string template. No HTML attribute escaping or URL encoding routine was found. | Avoid quotes, angle brackets, pasted markup, line breaks inside values, and malformed URLs. Clean suspicious values before generating. |
| Validation | No live crawl, reciprocal-link check, duplicate check, canonical check, redirect check, or HTTP status check was found. | Inspect the rendered pages after implementation and test the published URLs separately. |
| Output format | Generates HTML link elements for the page head, one per non-empty URL row. | Do not use this output as-is for XML sitemaps or HTTP Link headers; those formats require different surrounding syntax. |
HTML, Sitemap, and Header Scope
Google Search Central documents three common ways to indicate localized page versions: HTML <link> elements, HTTP Link headers, and XML sitemap annotations. This generator produces only the HTML form. That is usually convenient when you control the page template or CMS head area, but it is not the same markup you would place in a sitemap and it is not the comma-separated header format used for non-HTML files.
| Method | Where it belongs | Does this tool generate it? |
|---|---|---|
| HTML hreflang tags | Inside the page's <head> section. |
Yes. This is the generated output. |
HTTP Link header |
Server response headers, often useful for files such as PDFs. | No. You would need to rewrite the values into header syntax. |
| XML sitemap annotations | Inside sitemap <url> entries using the appropriate XML namespace. |
No. The generated HTML tags are not sitemap XML. |
Implementation Notes and Practical Checks
Hreflang annotations work best when each page in a localized set lists itself and the other alternates with matching reciprocal links. If the English page points to the French page, the French page should point back to the English page and include the same set for the rest of the cluster. The generator can help create the repeated block, but it cannot confirm that every page received the same block or that a CMS plugin did not modify it later.
Review canonical tags at the same time. A language-specific page should not accidentally canonicalize to a different-language page unless that is a deliberate edge case supported by your broader SEO plan. Also confirm redirects before publishing hreflang tags. If your generated URL redirects from http:// to https://, from a non-www host to a canonical host, or from a no-slash path to a slash path, consider using the final destination URL in the row.
Because the tool does not escape attribute values, clean input matters. The normal expected input is a URL and a short language code. If you paste a value containing a double quote, the generated HTML may become malformed. If you paste a relative path, the tool will output a relative path even though search documentation commonly recommends fully qualified alternate URLs. If you paste a language label such as French instead of fr, the tool will output exactly that label.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No output appears | The included rows may have blank URL fields, or reCAPTCHA may be visible and incomplete. | Enter at least one non-empty URL. Complete the captcha if it appears, then select Generate Tags. |
| A row is missing from the output | The generator skips rows whose URL is empty after trimming whitespace. | Check that the row has a URL value and that it was not removed before generation. |
The language value became en |
A non-default row had a blank language field. | Enter the intended language or language-region value before copying the block. |
| More than one row was intended as default | The interface allows only one x-default row at a time. |
Choose the single fallback URL. If you need several generic language pages, use normal language values instead of x-default. |
| The copied snippet does not paste | The browser may have blocked clipboard access, or the page may not have focus. | Click back into the page and try again, or manually select the read-only output text and copy it. |
| Search tools later report hreflang errors | The generator does not audit reciprocal tags, unsupported codes, redirects, canonicals, or page availability. | Inspect the published source on each alternate page and validate the whole language cluster with your normal SEO tools. |
