Sitemap Visualizer for Public XML Sitemap Review

Parse a public XML sitemap URL and review its declared sitemap or URL rows in a readable table. The Sitemap Visualizer fetches one public HTTP or HTTPS sitemap, rejects private and local network targets, disables automatic redirects, and reports type, total entries, latest lastmod value, and row-level metadata.

    How to use?

    • Enter the full URL of your XML sitemap (e.g., https://example.com/sitemap.xml).
    • Our tool will fetch and parse the XML content.
    • If it is a Sitemap Index, we will list the child sitemaps.
    • If it is a standard sitemap, we will display all URLs with their metadata (Priority, ChangeFreq, etc.).

DigitalDomainKit's Sitemap Visualizer helps you inspect a published XML sitemap from its URL. Enter one public http:// or https:// sitemap address, and the tool fetches that file from the server, parses the XML, and displays the sitemap rows it can read. For a standard urlset, it lists URL entries with loc, lastmod, changefreq, and priority. For a top-level sitemapindex, it lists child sitemap locations and their optional last-modified values.

This is a sitemap URL visualizer and parser, not a crawler, not a Search Console replacement, and not a promise that submitted pages will be indexed or ranked. It reads the XML available at the URL you provide. It does not recursively fetch child sitemaps from a sitemap index, does not log in to private dashboards, does not submit anything to search engines, and does not verify whether each listed page is canonical, indexable, reachable, or allowed by robots rules.

What the Sitemap Visualizer Actually Does

The reviewed implementation is a Laravel Livewire tool with one visible field labeled Enter Sitemap URL and a Visualize Sitemap button. The input is validated as required and URL-shaped before the request is made. The submitted value is then normalized through the shared public network target validator, which accepts only public HTTP and HTTPS URLs and rejects private, local, loopback, reserved, malformed, or unresolved targets before the sitemap fetch proceeds.

When the target is allowed, the server sends a GET request with a browser-style user agent, a 15-second timeout, and automatic redirect following disabled. Redirect behavior is important: if the sitemap URL returns a 301, 302, 307, or 308 instead of the XML body, the tool reports the fetch status rather than silently following the next location. Use the final sitemap URL directly when you already know it.

The parser uses simplexml_load_string() on the returned response body. If the XML root element is sitemapindex, the tool treats each sitemap child as a sitemap row and extracts loc and lastmod. Otherwise, it treats the document as a URL set and extracts loc, lastmod, changefreq, and priority from each url child. It then calculates a small summary: the detected type, the total row count, and the latest parsed lastmod timestamp when one can be interpreted.

    How to Use the Tool

    1. Open the Sitemap Visualizer.
    2. Paste the full sitemap address into Enter Sitemap URL. A complete value such as https://example.com/sitemap.xml is the safest input.
    3. Click Visualize Sitemap. The button shows a visualizing state while the Livewire request is running.
    4. Review any error message first. Common errors include rejected private targets, non-success HTTP status responses, timeouts, and invalid XML.
    5. If the file is a sitemap index, read the listed child sitemap locations and their optional lastmod values.
    6. If the file is a standard sitemap, review the URL rows, last-modified dates, change-frequency hints, and priority hints shown by the parser.
    7. Use the results as a review aid, then verify crawlability, canonical URLs, robots rules, and indexing status in your own SEO workflow.

    Inputs, Outputs, and Limits

The Sitemap Visualizer is intentionally narrow. That makes it useful when you already have a sitemap URL and want to see whether the XML is readable and what it declares, but it also means you should not treat the result as a complete technical SEO audit.

    Area Verified behavior Important limitation
Input One required sitemap URL entered in the visible Enter Sitemap URL field. The tool expects a public HTTP or HTTPS URL. It is not a file-upload tool and does not accept pasted XML.
Network validation Private, local, loopback, reserved, invalid, and unresolved targets are rejected before the server fetch. A hostname that resolves only to a blocked address cannot be checked, even if it works on your internal network.
Redirects The server request sets automatic redirect following to false. Submit the final sitemap URL directly. A redirect response can produce a failed-fetch status instead of parsed rows.
XML parsing The returned body is parsed as XML with PHP's SimpleXML parser. Invalid XML, HTML error pages, compressed files not decoded by the HTTP layer, or unusual document shapes may not produce useful rows.
urlset output Extracts each url row's loc, lastmod, changefreq, and priority. It does not fetch each listed page, check HTTP status, test canonical tags, or prove that URLs are indexable.
sitemapindex output Extracts each child sitemap row's loc and lastmod. It does not recursively fetch the child sitemap files. Open a child sitemap URL separately to inspect its URL rows.
Summary stats Reports detected type, total parsed rows, and latest parsed lastmod. Dates depend on what the XML declares and what PHP can parse with strtotime().

    Example: Reviewing a Published Sitemap

A verified test on September 16, 2026 used https://digitaldomainkit.com/sitemap.xml in the live Sitemap Visualizer. The tool parsed the file as a urlset, reported 316 total rows, and calculated the latest parsed last-modified timestamp as 2026-09-08 03:59:12. The first returned row was the site homepage with loc set to https://digitaldomainkit.com, lastmod set to 2026-09-08T03:59:12+00:00, changefreq set to daily, and priority set to 1.0.

That kind of result is useful for quick editorial and technical checks. You can confirm that important sections are present, scan for stale last-modified values, compare priority hints across templates, and spot accidental URLs that do not belong in the sitemap. The result should still be reviewed against the website itself. A sitemap can list a URL that redirects, returns an error, is blocked by robots.txt, has a conflicting canonical tag, or is ignored by a search engine for other reasons.

    Sitemap Fields the Tool Shows

Field Where it appears How to interpret it
loc Required in standard sitemap URL rows and sitemap-index rows. The declared URL or child sitemap location. Check for wrong hosts, staging URLs, mixed protocols, and unexpected paths.
lastmod Optional in both urlset and sitemapindex documents. A declared modification date. It should reflect meaningful page or sitemap changes, not arbitrary daily refreshes.
changefreq Optional in urlset rows. A hint from the sitemap publisher. Modern search systems may treat it as a weak signal or ignore it.
priority Optional in urlset rows. A relative hint within the same site. It is not a ranking score and should not be read as external importance.
Latest update Computed by the tool summary. The newest parsed lastmod value among displayed rows, or N/A when no usable dates are present.

    Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to try
The tool says the target is private, local, or reserved. The hostname or IP points to a blocked network range such as localhost, loopback, private LAN, link-local, or reserved address space. Use a publicly reachable sitemap URL. Internal development URLs are intentionally rejected.
The fetch returns a non-success status. The server returned an HTTP error, a redirect, an access-control page, or another status outside the successful range. Open the URL directly, find the final public sitemap address, and submit that final URL. The visualizer does not follow redirects automatically.
The result says the XML is invalid. The response may be an HTML page, a CMS error, malformed XML, or a protected file instead of sitemap XML. View source for the sitemap URL and confirm that it starts with a sitemap XML document, not a login page or branded error page.
A sitemap index only shows child sitemap URLs. The current tool lists top-level sitemapindex entries but does not recursively fetch each child file. Copy a child sitemap loc value and run it through the visualizer as a separate check.
Rows are missing changefreq or priority. Those sitemap fields are optional and many modern sitemap generators omit them. Focus first on complete, canonical loc values and truthful lastmod dates. Optional hints are not required for a valid sitemap.
The latest date looks wrong. The source XML may contain stale dates, different time zones, invalid date strings, or no lastmod values. Compare the raw XML with your CMS publishing dates and update the sitemap generator if it is writing misleading values.

    Privacy and Security Notes

This tool performs a server-side request to the sitemap URL you submit. That means the target website can see a request from DigitalDomainKit's server rather than from your browser alone. The sitemap URL is processed by the Livewire request so the server can fetch and parse the XML. Do not submit secret, tokenized, unpublished, or access-controlled sitemap URLs unless you are comfortable sending that URL to the service.

The public-target validation is also deliberate. A sitemap visualizer that fetches arbitrary URLs could otherwise be abused to probe internal networks. The inspected implementation blocks private, local, loopback, and reserved targets before fetching, and a live test on September 16, 2026 confirmed that http://127.0.0.1/sitemap.xml returned the error: private, local, and reserved network targets are not allowed. Automatic redirect following is disabled for the same reason: the tool should not silently chase a public URL into a private or unexpected destination.

    References and Review Notes

The sitemap protocol is documented at sitemaps.org, including the standard urlset, sitemapindex, loc, lastmod, changefreq, and priority elements. Google's sitemap documentation at Google Search Central is useful for understanding how Google discovers sitemap files and why a sitemap is a discovery signal rather than an indexing guarantee.

Editorial and testing notes: this draft was prepared for DigitalDomainKit on September 16, 2026 after inspecting the live page, the Livewire implementation, the shared public network target validator, and the no-longer-blocked workflow notes. Live smoke tests confirmed that /tool/sitemap-visualizer returned HTTP 200, that http://127.0.0.1/sitemap.xml was rejected with the private-target error, and that https://digitaldomainkit.com/sitemap.xml parsed as a urlset with 316 rows in the current live response.
